ISO 45001: main changes of the 2027 revision

Feb. 10 2026

WHAT’S NEW IN THE REVISION OF ISO 45001

At a time when the new ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards are about to be released, the ISO 45001 standard on Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, applicable to all organizations wishing to effectively manage health and safety risks, is also undergoing its periodic revision process.

ISO 45001 REVISION: CURRENT STATUS AND NEXT STEPS

In July 2025, the ISO/CD 45001 was published—the first official draft of the standard under revision—followed by a public comment phase. These comments are now being reviewed by Working Group WG6, which is responsible for updating the standard.
In January 2026, the second version of the First Committee Draft was released. This draft incorporates amendments to the main body of the standard based on the feedback received during the first international enquiry and also includes the draft of the informative Annex A.

WHAT ARE THE KEY UPDATES IN THE NEW ISO 45001 EDITION?

Although the content may evolve during the next approval steps, many significant updates compared to the current version can already be identified:

• Explicit focus on worker wellbeing, and not only on health and safety.
New working models, such as remote work.
• Greater attention to diversity, including gender, age, disability and more
Climate change is now officially integrated as part of the standard’s requirements
Technological evolution, with specific attention to Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The new standard is expected to be published around 2027.

HOW TO GET READY FOR THE UPDATED ISO 45001 STANDARD

The revised standard references several ISO guidelines that can support organizations in implementing the applicable requirements. These guidelines not only help organizations that already embrace an advanced safety culture—extended to all workers and integrated with sustainability—but also offer insights for those who have not yet adopted this approach.

The referenced guidelines include

  • ISO 45003:2021, Occupational health and safety management — Psychological health and safety at work — Guidelines for managing psychosocial risks
  • ISO 45006:2024, Occupational health and safety management — Guidelines for organizations on preventing, controlling and managing infectious diseases
  • ISO/PAS 45007:2025, Occupational Health and Safety Management – OH&S risks arising from climate change and climate action — Guidelines for organizations
  • ISO/CD 45008:2025, Occupational health and safety management — Guidelines for remote working
  • ISO/DIS 45010:2025, Occupational health and safety management – Menstruation, menstrual health and menopause in the workplace – Guidance
