STRENGTHENING THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP TO ADDRESS NEW ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES
ISO 14001: WHY A NEW REVISION?
The new revision of ISO 14001 represents an important step for the environmental management framework, introducing substantial improvements compared to the 2015 version and integrating emerging sustainability themes with a stronger leadership focus.
After an international consultation process, it was decided to update the standard to address emerging environmental challenges such as climate resilience, biodiversity, circular economy, and increased environmental responsibility, linking environmental sustainability to strategic business objectives.
WHAT ARE THE KEY TIMELINE STAGES FOR THE NEW ISO 14001?
The new standard is currently at the Draft International Standard (DIS) stage. The Final Draft (FDIS) was expected between December 2025 and January 2026, followed by the final publication of ISO 14001 scheduled for March 2026.
A three year transition period will be granted to organizations, although the official transition deadlines will be defined by National Accreditation Bodies and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

ISO 14001:2026 – MAIN UPDATES AND CHANGES
The new edition introduces several updates, including:

• Stronger, more active involvement of top management
• A life cycle approach and increased focus on impacts throughout the supply chain
• A push toward digitalization of environmental management processes and data
• Greater transparency in communication and more accessible environmental reporting.
Although the overall High‑Level Structure remains unchanged, the new edition improves clarity and usability through the introduction of the concept of change management and a stronger emphasis on climate change; a reorganization of requirements related to risks and opportunities, clarified terms and definitions, documentation management guidance, and internal audit expectations.
