The historical Classification Society, dedicated to Shaping a Better Maritime World, supports the start-up Ogyre for the recovery of plastics from the sea.
Bureau Veritas, a Business to Business to Society group of companies, is committed to act responsibly to Shape a Better World. In this context, Bureau Veritas undertakes initiatives that are in alignment with six of the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals (UNSDGs), aiming to contribute to Shaping a Better Workplace, a Better Environment and Better Business Practices.
Ogyre “On a mission to clean the ocean” is the first Italian platform for “Fishing for Litter”. It was founded in 2020 and aims to clean the seas of waste and plastic bottles. To achieve that, it engages fishermen who are remunerated and financed through a circular mechanism, based on collecting waste, recycling it and producing regenerated products. So far, 506.740 kg of marine litter have been collected from the sea.
It was only natural that Bureau Veritas, an international group with the sea in its DNA, and Ogyre, would cross paths. As a result, a partnership of significant importance commenced between Bureau Veritas Italy and Ogyre. The common goal of the partnership is to collect 2000 kg of waste from the sea by June 2024 and dispose of it responsibly through recycling centres.
Bureau Veritas, through supporting “Fishing for Litter” works, aims not only to help clean up the ocean but at the same time to empower the community to make a tangible contribution to the change we want to see in the world. Through its digital platform, Ogyre gives new life to waste materials by bringing it in the recycling chain, cleans the ocean by collecting marine litter and actively tracking our progress every day, empowers local communities by directly supporting their fishing activity and the fishermen currently involved in removing plastic and marine waste.
This initiative is perfectly in alignment with Bureau Veritas’ environmental and social objectives, and in particular with the Sustainable Development Goal 14 (UNSDG 14) "Life below water", with focus to "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development".
"Transparency, international impact, community empowerment are just some of the strengths of this partnership, always focused on the common mission: to have a tangible impact on the cleanliness of the sea," says Alberto Moroncelli, Country Chief Executive of the Marine Division of Bureau Veritas Italia. "Our collaboration with Ogyre gives us the opportunity to put our values into practice and actively contribute to solving a global challenge such as marine pollution".
"We are delighted to be working with a company like Bureau Veritas, with whom we share a deep passion for protecting the sea. This partnership allows us to join forces to fight marine pollution with even greater determination," commented Antonio Augeri and Andrea Faldella, founder and CEO of Ogyre.
