A COLLABORATIVE DIGITAL PLATFORM FOR CLASSIFICATION
While shipyards increasingly use 3D models of ships to facilitate vessel design and construction, the classification process has remained largely 2D. This makes for a time-consuming design and review process, as stakeholders must coordinate from various locations using multiple iterations of 2D drawings. Designers then need to integrate comments back into the 3D computer-aided design (CAD) model before they can be addressed coherently.
To give clients a cost- and time-efficient way to achieve Classification, Bureau Veritas developed 3D Classification. Clients benefit from an improved design review experience, gaining access to a digital platform that allows stakeholders around the world to collaborate in real-time.
IMPROVING DATA QUALITY FOR DESIGN REVIEW
By exclusively using a 3D model – rather than switching between 2D drawings and a 3D model – the quality of design and the review process can be significantly improved. An entirely 3D experience reduces the risk of errors and inconsistencies, improves data quality and safety, and limits lead times and costs.
INTEGRATED TECHNOLOGY FOR NEWBUILD CLASSIFICATION
Thanks to a partnership with Dassault Systèmes and Aerys started in 2019, and after a successful pilot program with Naval Group, Bureau Veritas has developed 3D Classification. This element of Digital Classification, allows shipyards to upload 3D models of vessels to our digital platform, from which Bureau Veritas experts can perform technical calculations using our proprietary naval architecture tools.
A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO DESIGN REVIEW
The collaborative platform at the heart of 3D Classification takes hull structure design review to a new level of efficiency. All stakeholders, including surveyors, shipyards, and clients can access the platform simultaneously, exchanging information, reviewing class comments on the 3D model and addressing them in real-time.
THE FUTURE OF 3D CLASSIFICATION
Our experts are working to add new features to 3D Classification, including fire safety, stability and machinery requirements. Furthermore, ship owners and managers can retain access to the digital twin of their asset throughout its lifecycle. This enables “3D continuity” from construction to operations, helping owners keep their assets safe and compliant.
