BIOMASS BIOFUEL, BIOLIQUIDS SUSTAINABILITY VOLUNTARY SCHEME

Renewable resources and sustainability requirements

The use of biofuels and biomass to replace fossil fuels is a fundamental step in the fight against climate change. The European Union, through Directive 2009/28/EC (RED I - renewable energy directive), updated with the ILUC Directive (EU) 2015/1513, has established a first common framework for the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources until 2020. Directive (EU) 2018/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 December 2018 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (RED II) sets a new binding target for the overall share of energy from renewable sources in the Union's gross final consumption of energy in 2030.

Biofuels, bioliquids and biomethane are among the renewable resources covered by the Directive, provided they meet specific sustainability and traceability requirements. Compliance with sustainability criteria and achievement of the percentage of greenhouse gas emissions can be demonstrated through certification in accordance with a voluntary certification system approved by the European Community, or by applying a certification system recognized by a nation.

What is the 2BSVS scheme?

The main purpose of the 2BSvs scheme is to enable all economic operators involved in the supply chain to demonstrate the sustainability of their products in accordance with Directive 2018/2001, the RED II Directive. The 2BSvs certification system was developed with the aim of covering the entire production chain, addressing any legal entity acting as:

  • First Gathering Entity (agricultural biomass);
  • Collection Point (waste and residues);
  • Trader (biomass, biofuels, biogas and bioliquids);
  • Processing Unit (biofuels, bioliquids, biogas).

2BS is a non-profit association whose objective is to help clients demonstrate compliance with the sustainability criteria outlined in current European legislation. The voluntary scheme that 2BS has developed is recognized by the European Commission and is implemented through a network of certification bodies, of which Bureau Veritas is a part, that are partners of 2BS.

How to obtain the certification according the 2Bsvs guideline?

The 2BSvs certificate is valid for five years and the certification process proposed by Bureau Veritas is structured as follows:

  • Main on-site audit
    The duration is determined based on the characteristics of the applicant company. Following a positive outcome of the Main audit, the company will receive the 2BSvs certificate, valid for five years.
  • Annual surveillance audit
    Carried out every year, for the five years of validity of the certificate, aimed at maintaining it.
