What is the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard?

Artificial intelligence is a discipline that studies how to create computer systems capable of simulating human thought, with infinite applications in all sectors and activities, both manufacturing and service provision. In response to the growth of Artificial Intelligence and the challenges-issues and perplexities it creates for creators and users of Artificial Intelligence, ISO and IEC have created the ISO/IEC 42001 Standard. This Standard provides a certifiable Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) framework (similar to the current experience in terms of Innovation Management with the future ISO 56001), in which Artificial intelligence systems can be developed and deployed as part of an Artificial Intelligence assurance ecosystem.

Bureau Veritas has defined a certification scheme for verifying the requirements contained in ISO/IEC 42001 and its technical annexes, aimed at issuing a non-accredited certificate of conformity (a process similar to that provided for ISO 56002). In creating the scheme, Bureau Veritas involved Artificial Intelligence experts and will ensure the quality of the certification service provided by using auditors with experience in both Management System assessment and AI projects, and, if necessary, by involving sector technicians (Healthcare - Agri-food - Oil&Gas - Energy) for more vertical and customized applications.

How to obtain the certification according to the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 guideline?

The service provided by Bureau Veritas concerns the verification of the Management System in accordance with ISO/IEC 42001 and the issuance of a non-accredited certificate of conformity (the accredited certificate will be issued in the future in accordance with the requirements defined by the Technical Circular issued by the Accreditation Body). The steps of the Management System verification carried out by Bureau Veritas are:

  1. Document review
  2. Verification of the effectiveness of operational processes and controls defined within the Artificial Intelligence system, with procedures and policies that translate the requirements of the Standard, adapting them to the organizational context.

  • How long does the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification audit and annual maintenance audits take?

    The duration of the certification audit and annual maintenance audits depends on the structure of the Organization dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (staff and sites) and on the complexity and number of projects as an integrative coefficient of complexity.

  • What is the duration of the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification contract?

    • The duration of the contract and certification is three years (as for all other Certification Schemes).

  • Can the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 be integrated with other certifications?

    ISO 42001, due to its HLS structure and topics, can be integrated with existing certification schemes in the company (e.g., ISO 9001 - ISO 27001 - ISO 14001 - certifications in the sustainability field...), to be renewed every three years to maintain the continuity and history of the certificate.

  • What is the current accreditation status of the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certificate?

    The certificate, in this initial phase, will be issued as non-accredited with the possibility - once accreditation is available - of issuing it after a periodic or renewal audit, integrating some requirements provided by the Technical Circular of the Accreditation Body (possible additional days for accreditation).
