ISO 39001:2012 Certification

ROAD TRAFFIC SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (RTS)

What is the ISO 39001:2012 standard?

Safety-conscious organizations cannot ignore the issue of Road Traffic Safety, burdened every year by hundreds of thousands of accidents in our country alone. The ISO 39001:2012 standard - Road Traffic Safety Management System - defines the requirements of a Road Traffic Safety Management System aimed at allowing any organization that interacts with the road system in some way to reduce deaths and serious injuries resulting from road collisions, by controlling and managing the variables that are under its influence.

The ISO 39001:2012 standard is applicable to any organization, of any type, regardless of the sector and the product/service provided. In particular, it responds to the needs of large companies and companies with a lot of traveling personnel, freight and passenger transport companies, organizations that generate a lot of traffic (shopping centers, hospitals, schools, public authorities, etc.), companies in the automotive sector (car production, tires, components, etc.).

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the ISO 39001 guideline

  • What are the main benefits of ISO 39001 certification?

    Managing Road Traffic Safety according to ISO 39001 allows companies to:

    • Improve Organization Management, in terms of Road Traffic Safety reduction of accidents and related costs;
    • Formalize and communicate their commitment to Road Traffic Safety issues;
    • Benefit from a better market positioning, for example vis-à-vis suppliers or in the context of public tenders and Ethical Procurement programs;
    • Improve employee awareness and involvement.
  • What are the risk factors that an organization should consider in the approach to ISO 39001 Certification?

    The main risk factors are:

    • The organization's impact on the road traffic system, relevant in the case of freight/passenger transport, construction/management/maintenance of roads, road rescue services, etc;
    • The number of traveling or commuting employees - the number of km traveled to and from the workplace and for business trips;
    • The number of sites and, in particular, sites that generate high traffic volumes;
    • The number of accidents, serious injuries and deaths from collisions recorded;
    • The outsourcing of risky activities to third parties.
  • What are the touchpoints between ISO 39001 and other QHSE schemes?

    The ISO 39001 standard has been developed as an addition to an organization's QHSE Policy. It can therefore be integrated with standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, also following their plan-do-check-act approach.
