ISCC Certification

INTERNATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY & CARBON CERTIFICATION

What is the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification?

ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) is a world-leading certification system that supports companies intending to act responsibly in ensuring sustainability throughout the entire supply chain and allows them to demonstrate their commitment to replacing fossil sources. ISCC certification is in line with EU directives: the ISCC EU scheme is recognized by the European Commission (EC) to demonstrate compliance with the legal requirements of the European Directive EU 2009/28/EC (RED I) and the more recent Directive 2018/2001/EU (RED II), which establish the necessary and specific requirements for producers of biofuels and bioliquids, with the ultimate goal of ensuring their sustainability.

ISCC's mission is to support companies in reducing GHG emissions and increasing transparency and traceability along supply chains, in compliance with mandatory sustainability requirements, but also in their voluntary contributions towards a more sustainable world. ISCC EU certification concerns the energy sector of biofuels for automotive use and bioliquids for cogeneration and applies to the entire production chain, from raw materials to finished products; it therefore covers farms (point of origin), collection points, traders, processing units and the finished product.

Bureau Veritas is Accredited by ISCC as an impartial third-party entity to carry out audit activities aimed at obtaining certification.

How to obtain the certification according to the ISCC EU standard?

The ISCC EU certificate is valid for one year and the certification process proposed by Bureau Veritas is structured as follows:

  • Registration of the applicant company on the ISCC website;
  • On-site audit, the duration of which is determined based on the characteristics of the applicant company;
  • Verification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the products, in case of use of calculated values.

    ISCC EU certification is specific to biofuels and bioliquids. However, ISCC has structured the ISCC PLUS scheme, which is also dedicated to other sectors, including solid biomass for direct combustion in heat production (e.g., pellets, wood chips, etc.). Visit our website for more information.

  • Is it possible to use the ISCC logo on certified products?

    Yes, it is possible to apply the ISCC logo on individual products. The use of the logo is subject to ISCC approval.
