EU Maritime MRV accreditation enables Bureau Veritas clients to meet deadline for compliance
Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, 1 March 2017 –
Bureau Veritas, the leading international classification society, has gained accreditation from United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS), in their pilot scheme, to carry out assessments and verifications for compliance with the European Union’s Maritime Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (EU MRV) regulation.
The regulation, part of the EU’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, requires operators to monitor and report on CO2 emissions based on ship fuel consumption. It applies to all merchant ships of 5,000 GT or above on journeys that call at an EU port.
Reporting is on both a per-voyage and an annual basis, and emissions monitoring plans and reports must be verified by an accredited verifier. Ship operators must achieve a number of milestones before the first monitoring period begins in 2018.
Patrick Le Dily, Vice President, Legal Compliance & Regulatory Management, Bureau Veritas said:
“As a leader in both regulatory compliance and environmental performance services for the marine industry, Bureau Veritas has a deep understanding of EU MRV and the challenges it brings.
UKAS accreditation combined with our worldwide organization and network of EU Maritime MRV Verifiers enables us to help clients meet the deadlines for compliance through timely approval of monitoring plans and future verification of monitoring reports.”
Bureau Veritas will act as a UKAS accredited EU Maritime MRV Verifier in accordance
with accreditation for ISO 14065:2013 certification scheme. Verification activities cover review and approval of emissions monitoring plans (2017), assessment of reports and issuing Documents of Compliance (both from 2019).

Bureau Veritas Hellas was awarded the prize "PIRAEUS INTERNATIONAL CENTRE 2015"
During the 2015 Lloyd's List Greek Shipping Awards Gala Dinner which took place on Friday December 4th 2015, at the Athenaeum Intercontinental, Bureau Veritas Hellas S.A. became the first Classification Society to win the prestigious Piraeus International Centre Award.
The award was handed out to Mr. Lambros A. Chahalis, Vice President, Regional Chief Executive Hellenic & Black Sea Region, by Captain Panagiotis N. Tsakos, Mr. Vassilis Papageorgiou and Panagiotis N. Tsakos, on behalf of the sponsor "The Tsakos Group".
It was the first time in the history of the Lloyd's List Greek Shipping Awards that a Classification Society won such a distinction.
This very award - a profound token of acknowledgement for the French classification Society's marked presence in Southeastern Europe for far more than a generation -, undoubtedly speaks for the wide acceptance and appreciation met among shipping industry's members towards Bureau Veritas; and this, against the background of the local center's outstanding results, which are founding on Bureau Veritas team's collective efforts aiming on continually enhancing overall performance so as to accommodate Greek Ship-owners' expectations from a recognized organization, authorized for statutory and voluntary certification and classification services by a vast number of flag States.
By combining traditional Gallic flair with Greek dedication and professional sense of duty, Bureau Veritas Hellas gradually rose - thanks to the unceasing efforts of its people -, to enjoy a predominant position and importance among the twelve international marine centers of our parent Society worldwide.
While the Bureau Veritas registered fleet had doubled in terms of DWT within the last decade, Bureau Veritas Hellas contributed a staggering thirty two percent of this figure, thanks to the shipping industry's trust, dedication and encouraging spurs.
Adhering to the common values and principles for safeguarding property and lives at sea, without compromising on environmental aspects, this trophy reflects the collective efforts of Bureau Veritas Hellas' personnel, who, in difficult circumstances, have made it possible.

The 17th annual meeting of the Hellenic and Black Sea Committee of Bureau Veritas was held on the 23rd of May 2014 under the Chairmanship of Mr. George Procopiou and the presence of the Bureau Veritas Management, namely Mr. Didier Michaud-Daniel, Chief Executive Officer of Bureau Veritas, Mr. Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice-President Marine & Offshore Division, Mr. Didier Bouttier, Senior Vice President Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore Division South Europe, Middle East & Africa Zone, Dr. John Kokarakis, Technology & Business Development Director Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore Division, Mr. Lambros A. Chahalis, Vice President Regional Chief Executive Hellenic & Black Sea Region, Mr. Anastasios Angelopoulos, Deputy Country Chief Executive for Greece & Cyprus, Mr. Philippe Boisson, Communication Director, Mr. Jean-Francois Segretain, Marine Technical Director Marine & Offshore Division, Mrs. Paillete Palaiologou, Sales, Marketing & Business Development Manager & Mr. Michael Sterghiou, Director SE Europe of BV Commodities.
This year the Committee event took place in Grand Resort Lagonissi.
The meeting, chaired by Mr. George Procopiou, started with the announcement of the new Committee Members:
Mr. Demetris Condylis, Commercial Manager of Oceanbulk Maritime S.A. & Captain Elias Gotsis, President of Eurotankers Inc.
Mr. Didier Michaud-Daniel presented the Bureau Veritas Group Activities for the year 2013, which showed once again a continuation of the strong growth of the Group.
Mr. Philippe Donche-Gay presented to the members of the Committee the Marine & Offshore Activities for the year 2013.
Mr. Lambros Chahalis presented the latest Marine & Offshore Activities in the Hellenic & Black Sea Region, including the great response and acceptance by the local shipping community. This has been materialized by record number of transfer of class ships & new buildings entrusted to Bureau Veritas.
Mr. Jean-Francois Segretain presented the technical developments within Bureau Veritas focusing on containership safety introducing innovative new rules which account for actual loads as opposed to the more conservative North Atlantic conditions. Bureau Veritas is pioneering new techniques to study phenomena like whipping and springing which are not fully understood or considered in the design of "flexible" slender vessels like Lakers, VLOCs and ULCCs. In the same spirit, he discussed the technique applied by BV to study the alignment of shafting taking into account the deformations of the Engine Room
Dr. John Kokarakis then discussed the challenges associated with the selection and installation of Ballast Water Treatment Systems. Given the large number of required retrofits, the short time available and the extended scope of class approval, review and approval of the design is a challenge by itself. The convention allows for application of advanced tools like 3-d laser scanning and flow cytometry. It is necessary to study all available systems in great detail in order to be able to select the most suitable one. On the other hand caution should be exercised to preserve coatings and the targets of reduced CO2 emissions. Global and local currents might render the treatment process meaningless.
Special guest of the event was the Managing Director of The Republic of the Marshall Islands - International Registries Inc., Mr. Theofilos K. Xenakoudis.
All participants to the Committee meeting concluded the day with a lunch at the "Kohylia" Restaurant of the Grand Resort Lagonissi.
